Pats' Brady injures knee in win over KC (AP) -

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (12) has his leg buckled by Kansas City Chiefs safety Bernard Pollard, bottom, during the first quarter of an NFL football game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass., Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008. Brady left the game and was taken to the locker room.

Tom Brady screamed. The fans went quiet. The seemingly indestructible star of the New England Patriots lay on the ground, clutching his left knee. The NFL's reigning MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion was done for the day -- at least. "He was in a lot of pain. When you hear a scream, you know that," Kansas City safety Bernard Pollard said after hitting Brady on the left leg midway through the...

Hall of Famer Don Haskins dies at 78 (AP) -

In this March 19, 1966 file photo, Texas Western College head basketball coach Don Haskins, second from left, and players celebrate after winning the 1966 NCAA basketball championship in College Park, Md. Haskins died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008 at the age of 78.

The glow from Don Haskins' greatest triumph was mostly a memory when Disney decided to take another look. Then came the movie "Glory Road" and a whole new generation learned what Bob Knight already knew about his old friend's career -- and legacy. "Don got more out of his teams and players than any coach who has ever coached college basketball," Knight said.

Delhomme TD on last play edges Chargers (AP) -

Carolina Panthers kicker John Kasay watches the flight of his 49-yard field goal during the fourth quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in San Diego. Kasay kicked four field goals in the Panthers 26-24 win over the San Diego Chargers.

Their eyes met -- the tight end under the goal posts and the quarterback who was moving up in the pocket, trying to keep the play alive. Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers? Oh no, try Jake Delhomme and Dante Rosario of the Carolina Panthers. Delhomme came back from an elbow injury with the kind of impact the San Diego Chargers won't soon forget, throwing a 14-yard touchdown pass to Rosario as time...

Romo, Barber lead Cowboys past Browns (AP) -

Cleveland Browns cornerback Eric Wright (24) intercepts a pass in the end zone intended for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Terrell Owens (81) in the third quarter of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in Cleveland. The Cowboys beat the Browns 28-10.

Tony Romo's bloodied chin needed stitches and an X-ray, and Marion Barber's ribs were badly bruised. The Dallas Cowboys absorbed more than a few hard knocks on Sunday. Not as many as they landed, though. Picking apart Cleveland's secondary with ease, Romo passed for 320 yards, Terrell Owens caught a 35-yard touchdown pass and Barber scored on a pair of 1-yard runs as the Cowboys opened a season they...

Murray tops Nadal, reaches US Open final (AP) - Rafael Nadal hunched over, his chest heaving, his hopes of reaching his first U.S. Open final fading fast. No one ever seems to run Nadal ragged. Andy Murray managed to do just that. Exhibiting precisely the sort of winner-vaporizing, opponent-demoralizing defense new No. 1 Nadal usually employs, Murray reached his first Grand Slam final by completing a stunning, rain-interrupted 6-2, 7-6 (5), 4-6,...
