Maria Sharapova pulled out of the Italian Open semifinals because of a strained left calf Saturday, two days before she is to assume the No. 1 ranking following Justine Henin's retirement. Sharapova said the injury would not affect her preparations for the French Open, which begins next weekend. "I don't think so.


Nadal, Federer to meet in Hamburg final (AP) -

Rafael Nadal fought off a challenge from Novak Djokovic 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 Saturday to set up another final against defending champion Roger Federer at the Hamburg Masters. The top-ranked Federer overwhelmed Andreas Seppi 6-3, 6-1 in the other semifinal. He won his fourth Hamburg title last year by beating Nadal in the final.


Big Brown favored to win Preakness (AP) -

Rick Dutrow Jr. is nearly as confident that undefeated Big Brown will win the Preakness on Saturday as he was before the colt's dominating win in the Kentucky Derby. Nothing changed the trainer's mind after watching the muscular horse out on the track for a short run through the stretch in the pre-dawn hours Saturday to keep him fit and on edge for his race later in the day.


Lakers reach West finals, hold off Jazz (AP) -

Kobe Bryant has some time to rest his back. Not that he appears to need it. Bryant scored 34 points, 12 in the fourth quarter, and Los Angeles held off a furious rally by the Utah Jazz for a 108-105 victory Friday night in Game 6, putting the Lakers in the Western Conference finals for the first time in four years.


Cavs ride James, force Game 7 at Boston (AP) -

The Boston Celtics are going home for another Game 7. They handled the Atlanta Hawks. LeBron James may not be as easy. James scored 32 points -- 19 in the second half -- and the Cavaliers forced a decisive and fitting finale to this home-sweet-home playoff series with a 74-69 victory Friday night over the Celtics, who have gone from regular-season road kings to postseason road kill.
